The Wife

2017

★★★ Watched

The Wife is a fine piece of competent filmmaking elevated by strong leading performances but hampered somewhat by certain storytelling devices and a distinct lack of urgency and ion overall.

Glenn Close has been generating buzz for quite some time thanks to her role in this film, and she definitely brings undeniable tenacity to the character of Joan, even if her quiet rage must be maintained until a climactic third act confrontation scene. It is quite an understated role, and…

“She’s got a BA in Journalism and Cinema Studies. No wonder she’s selling her eggs. She can’t get a job.”

Private Life, you didn’t have to come for me like this.

(Kathryn Hahn was unjustly snubbed of a Best Actress nomination, that’s all.)

Private Life is real, raw, and riveting. Thanks to an empathetic and emotionally affective script from Tamara Jenkins and equally moving turns from Kathryn Hahn, Paul Giamatti, and Kayli Carter, the narrative mines heavy thematic material for humor and heart.

This is a film I’d heard much about for months, and for some reason, I’d kept pushing it off. “It’s always available on Netflix,” I’d say. “I’ll get to it eventually.”

Well, I am DAMN glad I watched this one…

Eighth Grade

The scene in the backyard between Kayla and her father is one of the most well-acted, well-written, and well-directed interactions between a parent and child I’ve seen in any film ever, and I’m beyond thankful that Bo gave us this rare moment of vulnerability. This movie is all heart, all the time, and it’s a true marvel for the coming of age genre.

Eighth Grade

Eighth Grade is a raw and authentic emotional experience that tackles complex, societal struggles on such an intimate, personal level. I’m *technically* on vacation right now, so I don’t have enough time to rave about this film as I would like to. But here’s what I can say thus far:

1. Elsie Fisher is an absolute revelation. She conveys a plethora of emotions with a simple sigh, and the verisimilitude of her performance is beyond compare. She blended perfectly with…

Wildlife

★★★★½ Liked 2

Wildlife is a luscious look at the deterioration of an American family just attempting to get by in the late 1960s, and it thrives with newcomer director Paul Dani’s painterly attention to detail and Carey Mulligan’s powerhouse performance.

This is quite possibly one of the most beautiful films I’ve seen all year. There are so many frames I wanted to capture and keep with me and hang in my house. You are entirely submerged into the environment of the American…

Minding the Gap

2018

★★★½ Liked Watched

Minding the Gap is a poignant, dramatically affecting look at the treacherous journey from childhood to adulthood and the everlasting impact of domestic abuse on youth. Touching on themes of masculinity, racial profiling, and mental illness, Bing Liu’s debut feature packs a relevant, gnarly punch and backs up its weighty topics incredible humanity and genuity. He provides us with raw, authentic, messy stories and neglects to answer any of the film’s many questions, leaving it up to the perception of…

Happy mother/daughter movie night!

(P.S. This is still an absolute masterclass in horror and tension-building, Toni Collette *absolutely* deserves an Oscar nomination, and Ari Aster is a true creative force to be reckoned with)

“When I am weak, I am strong”

The Miseducation of Cameron Post plays as a scrapbook of queer experiences, channeling all the good and the bad with such raw authenticity and honesty (thanks to impeccable acting) that one can forgive the rather loose narrative and sometimes ambling storytelling due to its quiet, haunting resonance.

As our protagonist, Chloë Grace Moretz effortlessly captures the hesistance and uncertainty Cameron faces as her life is completely upended following a hook-up with her best…

I had just gotten back from watching Creed II and I thought to myself, “Ya know, I could really go for more Michael B. Jordan right about now,” and this hit the spot.
