A movie that makes me feel like few movies - if ever - have before. I catch myself saying “This is my favorite scene!” every single scene. Not just my favorite film of last year, but of many many many years. Sheer movie magic from start-to-finish.
(And it should be winning Best Original Screenplay in a WALK.)
Warts and all… I just LOVE Licorice Pizza with my whole heart. It’s the most fun I’ve had at the movies in ages, it’s my favorite PTA, and I can’t explain how much the character of Alana means to me. Therefore, it was my honor to give it one last push for an Original Screenplay win in Next Best Picture’s annual FYC post!

The Tobey Maguire subplot is literally the only thing keeping me from giving this a full 5/5, it ALWAYS drags but then Damien saves things with that psychotic final scene so I guess all’s well that ends well 😌
In time, I think we’ll view Damien Chazelle’s Babylon as a misunderstood masterpiece, so here’s my defense of the film, including why I think some of the major critiques miss the mark.
Babylon is a brilliant, bombastic, and bewildering ode to the immortality of art and the artists that have struggled against the system since the dawn of time, with two of the year’s most ionate performances courtesy of Margot Robbie and Diego Calva. A true feat of filmmaking and one of 2022’s best.
It’s like… almost impossible to put into words how much I love this movie and all that it’s about, and how much it means to me already lol? Had to watch it one last time before my digital screener expired, but also because I needed a refresher before I write my rave review coming at the end of this week when that embargo breaks and I can’t wait to flood everyone’s feed with Babylon fever 🥰🤗😌
Babylon is the most that any movie has ever movie’d. Damien Chazelle’s vibrant vision of 1920s Hollywood completely captures the cacophonous chaos of the era, Margot Robbie turns in a towering powerhouse performance that may be her best yet, and in the dynamite and dashing Diego Calva, a star is born.
Yes, it’s A Lot™️ - three hours of opulent sensory overload - but there’s a method to Chazelle’s madness that’s mystifying to witness. It’s all fun… until it’s not.…

I started sobbing as soon as Neteyam and Lo’ak go back to save Spider this time because I already knew what was coming and I didn’t stop crying on and off until after that gutpunch of a final scene (I’m 😭 just 😭 happy 😭 to 😭 see 😭 you 😭) so James Cameron will be sent my therapy bills for the foreseeable future.
