A Man Called Otto is an old-fashioned crowdpleaser to its core, but it still mostly worked for me? Sure, the storytelling is a bit simplified, but it balances its humor and heartbreak beautifully, Tom Hanks is a hoot, Mariana Treviño steals EVERY scene (Best ing Actress nomination when), and there’s even some shockingly solid trans representation with a ing character (which feels like a first for a major studio movie?).

Some will still say it’s corny and cliché, but it’s so earnestly charming nonetheless and really won me over by the end. With a heart this huge, it’s hard to go wrong.

The Pale Blue Eye is a genuinely gripping whodunit that also functions as an origin story of sorts for Edgar Allen Poe, played here to perfection by a mesmerizing Harry Melling, who holds his own against the commanding Christian Bale. At points, it can tread into predictable territory, but it’s saved by a terrific twist that contorts this seemingly straightforward murder mystery into something far more morally complex - and memorable, as a result.

The Tobey Maguire subplot is literally the only thing keeping me from giving this a full 5/5, it ALWAYS drags but then Damien saves things with that psychotic final scene so I guess all’s well that ends well 😌

Babylon is a brilliant, bombastic, and bewildering ode to the immortality of art and the artists that have struggled against the system since the dawn of time, with two of the year’s most ionate performances courtesy of Margot Robbie and Diego Calva. A true feat of filmmaking and one of 2022’s best.

Had to watch it one last time before my digital screener expired, but also because I needed a refresher before I write my rave review coming at the end of this week when that embargo breaks and I can’t wait to flood everyone’s feed with Babylon fever 🥰🤗😌
