I’m not here to fight about this film - since the conversation has already descended into chaos and I don’t think anyone’s minds can be changed at this point - but I just want to reiterate how well the movie’s resolution works in my eyes. Whatever your misgivings may be with the comedy that comes before, I think it’s almost impossible to deny the feeling of that final scene, and it’s easily the most effective beat of the entire film.
It touches on a theme I think many can relate to all too well at the moment - attempting to ignore the anarchy of the world around us through everyday activities and conversation as we find ourselves unable to reverse the social ruination taking place - and it genuinely brings me to tears every time. As we head into year three of this terrible pandemic that has robbed so many of us of events and experiences we’ve long looked forward to and left our lives in a constant state of limbo, I can’t help but see the parallels between our current situation created by institutional indifference to these issues, and I’m left heated and heartbroken every single time.
If this isn’t for you, that’s fine. But it’s one of the films that’s made me feel the most in this melancholic year - good, bad, and everything in between - and for that, I’m forever thankful.
