Sinners

★★★★★ Liked Rewatched

I have seen Sinners three times in IMAX at this point. I am not being hyperbolic or facetious when I say that I think its maybe the most daring American blockbuster we've had since The Matrix, in of formal excellence intertwining with and enhancing thematic depth.

Don't misunderstand me: I'm not saying that Sinners is the best movie of the last 30 years, or any other objective qualitative declarations that fail to articulate what's so good about it. But…

If we truly believe in art as one of the most transformative tools of empathy humans have cultivated, then what medium is more direct, more forceful, than that of film? The movie camera allows us to live a thousand unique lives, and carries with it the potential to expose people to perspectives they've never considered from voices they don't often hear. And yet, the traditional visual framing of narrative storytelling is inherently removed; there's a distance that allows us to…

Gleefully salacious and shocking throughout and designed entirely to make you question the Faustian bargain between "truth" and "entertainment" undertaken by so much news media in the reporting of true crime. Truthfully don't know what to make of the "Monacled Mormon" case, but this documentary makes it clear that it was always going to be impossible to discern fact from fiction in the news landscape this occurred in -- but on top of that, Errol Morris also scrutinizes our social…

Body Bags

Never gets better than that first short (genuinely frightening, nasty lil piece of workplace horror) and it's such a shame how hard it falls off bc Carpenter and Hooper doing Creepshow should've been way funner than this. "Check it out, I'm a freaky mortician" is a great wraparound bit and genuinely the only good piece of comedy here, the rest of it is grating. I honestly wish the writing rose to meet the strength of the practical effects, there are…

★★ Watched

Bad bad stupid movie. Gorgeous color work and decadent shot composition can't save this from being desperately, pathetically edgy, juvenile, and thematically confused. An impeccable ensemble in service of paper-thin characters -- Barry Keoghan in particular is disappointingly flat, stuck playing a caricature of the depraved little freak he's been circling his entire career. Jacob Elordi and Rosamund Pike are trying their best, but the soul-sucking rich vampires the movie keeps swearing that they are never show up. Instead, for…

Saving Face

Really adored this effortlessly funny, effortlessly tender romance/coming-of-age film for aimless twenty-somethings still afraid of their parents. There's a warm, rosy naturalism to the look of Saving Face that took my breath away, perfectly complimenting the bittersweet emotional honesty at the core of its cyclical story about two generations of Chinese-American women struggling under cultural and gendered and social expectations. The whole ensemble is wonderful but my God Joan Chen floored me here, masterclass performance of immeasurable complexity and vulnerability…
