Watching this at a drive-in theater where a grimy, crusty ass film print of this movie on a giant screen clashes with being surrounded by clear summer skies and stars around you feels like the absolute perfect and ideal way to watch this movie, and seeing the ending Penis gag on an actual 35MM print after all these years feels oddly full circle. This does the whole “horror movie about trauma and/or depression” thing decades before every single mainstream American horror movie drove that trope to the ground, and executes that brand of horror with so much more empathy and palpable sadness than all of those movies combined.
