Christiane F.

1981

★★★½ Watched

It's like having your head washed in a toilet for a little more than two hours. Christiane F., from , is one of the heralded foreign films of the early 1980's, aggrandized by the shock value of graphically depicting 13-year old children helplessly hooked on heroin. Somehow in the DVD age, it has become unbearably difficult to track it down and find a legitimate copy (the film is notoriously known for having a cut that features terribly out-of-whack and embarrassing…

Past Lives

2023

★★★★★ 13

Two young ones are barely past 12-years old, but their parents allow them go out on a “date.” The two of them begin to spend special time together. Not a lot of verbal exchanges are needed. This is a spirited away connection, a floated kinship.

I have an unusual takeaway right now, and God knows there will be at least one person out there who will think what I’m about to say is racist—but like that Seinfeld episode, how can…

Alphaville

1965

★★ Watched

It is a tedious two-stars film, but Jean-Luc Godard’s Alphaville does provoke a certain curiosity. As an experiment, it’s worth a few thoughts and perhaps inspired a certain direction of mood in other cerebral science-fiction art. The film is shot in Paris in black & white with low-contrast lighting, under fluorescents, dimmed hues, at night, and framed in odd angles to make you think you’re somewhere in the future. Lemmy Caution (Eddie Constantine, skin of a reptile) has arrived from the…

Liquid Sky

1982

Watched

Aliens. Psychedlic images alternating with stagy acting. Talk of pansexual sex. Talk of orgasms. Punk music. Buzzing synthesizer score that’s irritating to me. Bottom basement fashions. Drugs. Always talking about hardcore drugs. Hated Liquid Sky. What I hated is that nobody here represented basic human values that I uphold. Which is to say, I personally was never meant to watch this movie. But I did. It does belong to a cult audience who would find this far-out, but count me out.

In Australia when an Aborigine man-child reaches sixteen, he is sent out into the land. For months he must live from it. Sleep on it. Eat of its fruit and flesh. Stay alive. Even if means killing his fellow creatures. The Aborigines call it the Walkabout. This is the story of a Walkabout.” – Prologue

The greatest film ever made. Walkabout features two city children lost in the Outback, luckily saved by an Aborigine boy who is on his yearlong…

The Night Porter

**I do not want LIKES for this review. Read bottom.

Once upon a time, there might have been a few who took it seriously enough to enjoy it as renegade art, but today it is Nazi kitsch. Nothing here should qualify it as good in any frame of mind.

At a Vienna hotel in 1957, Charlotte Rampling is a concentration camp survivor who runs into Dick Bogarde the eponymous night porter who spends his days now quiet as "a church…
