What a self-indulgent, pretentious waste of 3 hours. From the aspirational-but-utterly improbable casting of roles through to the most cliché dialogue, the entire production was a drawn-out endurance that could have been wrapped up in several different, and considerably more efficient ways.
The entire effort felt gratuitous, srlf-congratulatory and with so many lingering slow-motion scenes out was all just awfully unnecessary.
You aren't missing much.
This movie was released in 1999 almost immediately following the release of the novel, so I expected ideas of that time's future to be optimistic.
I work in the IT sector, so I made a point of setting my expectations very low. The assumptions on what technology would look like and be capable of ten years in the future were predictably gradiose but the dialogue and score is inexcusable.
