Dune: Part Two

Have you ever watched the same movie twice in one day? I hadn’t until today. But Dune: Part Two is just that special. A once in a life time cinematic masterpiece, this film is a juggernaut in every single department. Villeneuve is out here redefining an entire industry and setting a standard higher than ever imagined.

I probably sound like a broken record at this point, but not even in the infinite wisdom of the Maker would I be able to tell you how many viewings of this I need. This is five now and I still can’t get over the simple fact that this movie exists. And I really can’t believe how far it leans into the villainy of Paul Atreides. Certainly all the environmentalism, anti-colonialism, and the reverse white savior trope are going to go over a lot of people’s heads; Paul is going to be misinterpreted by another generation. But the complexity of Dune is what made it my favorite piece of fiction ever. There’s so many layers, so much nuance, so much HISTORY in this sci-fi universe. It’s a miracle that one man was able to invent Arrakis—and it’s by the grace of Shai Hulud that Villeneuve managed to adapt it in a way that is both sincere and massively entertaining.

It would probably be in the best interest of my well being if I took a break from watching this, but I literally don’t want to watch anything else. It isn’t every day that the greatest science fiction film of all time is available to watch in theaters, so I have to live every day like it’s the last. Besides, there’s still at least three other formats I haven’t watched Dune: Part Two in, so some might say I haven’t experienced everything this film has to offer. There’s still work to be done in the name of Holy Cinema.
