Punishment: Chapter Eight

Oh, was I supposed to be interested in this? Was I supposed to be drawn in by a lead performance less charismatic than a pile of dirt? Was I supposed to be frightened by the lackluster scares or the absent atmosphere? Was the thin story which takes forever to do anything supposed to be the hook?

The only good thing about The Tattooist is that it engages in some way with Samoan culture, which is interesting yet underrepresented in film.

I only saw snippets of the trailer, but between that and some early reception I'd heard, I didn't expect Materialists to be has heavy as it could be. It's not a totally intense affair, but Song hasn't hard-pivoted into light and breezy rom-com territory after her remarkable debut.

"I'm saying, 'I'm not saying.'"

Definitely my favorite Wes Anderson of the 2020s so far (barring those Roald Dahl shorts which I haven't seen yet). It's an engaging and funny father-daughter story, but also one of a man undergoing a change. Loved the cast in this.
