Dune: Part Two

I don't really know how to start a review of such a movie. I'm not a lifelong Dune fan, but I have been a fan of Dune ever since I watched Lynch's film in 2018. To me, Dune movies are one of my most important obsessions. I have been waiting for this adaptation to come to the theaters like the Fremen have been waiting for their Lisan Al-Gaib.

And so it did. And oh my god, what a movie this is. Of course we were all expecting this movie to be visually striking because of Denis at the helm and Greig Fraser behind the camera, but damn, it looks gorgeous. And the sound! Both of the times I watched this, the theater itself was vibrating.

The acting is truly spectacular, and Timothee is a bona fide leading man. But this wouldn't have been a good story if it wasn't for Zendaya to counteract him. She really proves here, with her acting, that all that fame is very much deserved.

Dune Part Two is also much more action-packed and has more moments of levity than the first film. Some say this was done to make the movie more palatable to the general audience, and I might agree with that. But it didn't detract from the experience, and I would even say that it made the film go by much faster. It's a 2,5 hour film yet it flies by like it was 90 minutes. Tremendous pacing.

Oh, and the soundtrack, while in typical Zimmer fashion is full of droning and drums and chanting, slots really neatly into the whole piece that is Dune Part Two. It elevates even the most humble of scenes into something moving.

I could continue gushing about how special this film is, but I'll just wrap this up before I write a whole essay.

I'll probably watch it a few more times.

P.S. I think deviations from the book were really necessary to make this work. Also there are some things I find lacking on a second rewatch, but they detract neither from the experience, nor from the rating.
