Sorry Beau but I never wanted this to end and luckily for me it never did

The song from the Face Off ad is going triple platinum in my house. Cried laughing at “pee pee dickey.” This is a very very funny movie and it makes absolutely zero sense. Unrateable.

Maybe it’s all the Michael Cera and Catholicism but I really connected to this one

Some genuinely interesting and unique direction from Stiller. A visual style that so clearly laid the groundwork for what he’d go on to do with Severance, which for my money is one of the best directed TV shows of the decade so far. But this is mostly just a wholesome movie that is quite weirdly written at times (weird as in cliche and boring!) and makes you think “how the fuck is this guy receiving a phone call and playing soccer 18,000 feet up in the Himalayas?” 

Jenny and I gasped and looked at each other like Marvel fans after a post-credit cameo scene when Ben Stiller received his severance package and the worker was like “here is your severance package” so that was a highlight.

Couldn’t stop imagining a remake of this with Glenn Howerton playing a lunatic version of Guy Patterson.

My review: an elongated sketch that definitely didn’t need to be a feature. Still found it funny throughout so I had a good time👍🏻

Alex’s review: I JUST WANTED IT TO MEAN SOMETHING🫤

I grew up in a family that went to Disney World every year. Several of my family were also longtime foster parents to teenagers who’d grown up in circumstances similar to or worse than Moonee’s. The stark contrast between my abundance of privileges and the bleak familial details of those kids was always apparent to me but not in the same ways it was gratingly apparent to them. We are, at least on the surface, a reflection of the cards we’ve been dealt. Generally, most of us are only as pleasant as the world has been to us. It’s far easier to be affable and “virtuous” when you aren’t living day by day at the limit. Most of these characters are unlikeable, to be sure. I know plenty of real-life Halleys whose kids are real-life Moonees. They’re often brash and obnoxious and prepared to employ any sleight-of-hand to get what they’re after. But what of it? Baker presents this harsh realism against the kitschy backdrop of Orlando in the summertime. Every character is living on the fringes of The Most Magical Place on Earth, just close enough to know exactly what they’re missing and desperate enough to nestle perfectly into the trashy tourist-trap tapestry that surrounds it. With painstaking fidelity and a degree of foundational comion one can only write having lived amongst characters like these, Baker also delivers one of the most visually poetic movies I’ve ever seen. It would be hard to find a movie that inspires me as a filmmaker more than this one does.

The type of profound reflection on what it means to be a human being on this earth that can only seen from outer space.

Connected much more this time around. Hits different now being someone even broker than Llewyn is (I am fiscally poor but rich in spirit! And I laughed many a time throughout this rewatch!). Very very well-written, the Coen brothers demonstrate here that they know how to structure a scene like nobody’s business; every 8-10 minutes of the runtime plays out like its own short film. You could take any one of these scenes in isolation and have a remarkably lucid portrait of Davis’ flaws, motivations, conflicts, and history… his ideals and his disillusions. Each ing character and each scene is a revelation unto itself. -1 star cuz it just doesn’t move me how I wish it would, but then again, no Coen brothers movie really does. Fargo being the exception that proves the rule.

Riiiiiiight

Always a highly engrossing watch, what really captured me this time around is how beautifully intricate the blocking is. I can’t quit thinking about how much fluidity and emotional resonance Wright captures with his direction. The writing is evergreen obviously but this adaptation is just such a striking display of technical prowess on all fronts.

I thought this was gonna be, like, mostly about skydiving

I got chills at least four separate times so that’s a good sign. Granted, with musical biopics especially, the line between nostalgia/familiarity-induced partiality and genuine artistic evocation can get blurred, but the key here is I think it still works even if you have no prior knowledge of Dylan whatsoever. The music is undeniable, but so is the guy. Shrouded in mystery, allergic to celebrity, preternaturally talented, etc etc, the character of Bob Dylan and the story of his indelible Minnesotan footprint in American history is as compelling as any of his compositions.

Timmy is outstanding. The choice to have him perform live in each take makes all the difference in capturing Dylan’s distinctive magnetism. Like the first time I watched Stop Making Sense, my conscious mind had to step in to prevent myself from applauding essentially every performance. It’s evident a lotta love was poured into this production. Love and care doesn’t necessarily mean the movie is gonna be any good, but this movie is good.

Not perfect, but so much better than I . Worth all the hype it’s accrued over the decades. Mr. Vernon is sooooo hot sorry. I’d like to take this opportunity to say that the Victorious episode parodying this movie is probably the funniest thing ever conceived.

Perfect, brilliant. Had me sobbing like a motherfucker. Imagine being Jennifer Lame and having to edit that Williams/Affleck scene… literally just emotional self-harm.

Both this and Gerwig’s version are genuine masterworks and thank goodness for that bc hot diggity dog, Alcott’s source material is timelessly moving.

Ah the year 2000

Pour one out for my dad who decided he would scroll through the Musicals section of some random Roku app and landed upon this for his Thanksgiving evening watch. “What a strange musical” he commented about 20 minutes in, unknowingly strapped in for the most batshit movie De Palma ever made.

When you’ve lost your mind so bad that you’re convulsing on the couch ugh girl I’ve been there. Not for the same reasons, but I’ve been there.

These two divas took the earliest, cuntiest version of The Substance and were able to maximize their t slay. Camp!
