This was truly a spectacle. Everyone talking about how this is our generations Star Wars has grounds to make that claim based off the sheer magnitude and beauty of this film. It elevates from the first Dune and pushes the story further. The cast was a joke like it’s unbelievable how many massive names they got no matter how large or small the role was. I fear that’s the Denis pull.
I also think that I loved Dune: Part 2 as an experience. The film is meant to be watched on a massive IMAX screen along with its booming sounds of worm riding or moments of “the voice” leaving me paralyzed in my seat. And despite great performances from Timothée Chalamet, Javier Bardem and Zendaya, the film lacked those emotionally driven scenes (Me thinks it needed more Rebecca Fergalicious who carried the first). I cry so easily during movies and there wasn’t even a moment where I felt like tearing up. I think the film could’ve really spent some time on the roles and conflict of father figures because it felt like Gurney and Stilgar would be on the opposite shoulders of Paul only for nothing really to happen there. I also thought they would’ve done some potential father figure work with Baron Vladimir but that did NOT happen.
Just quickly about the villains. I think that was the biggest let down for this film because they build up the villains only for fuck all. And to the people who said Austin Butler’s performance would rival Bardem as Anton Chigurh and Heath Ledger as The Joker, GET HELP PLEASE. He was good, really good but not even fucking close to an all time antagonist. If I shaved my eyebrows and tongued a kitchen knife in a parking lot people would be scared of me too. He ain’t special. I would’ve been more interested if he FUCKED Twinkothy Chalamet on IMAX LASER.
But I digress. The film is magic as an experience and is something I’ll have to see in theatres again because I don’t think the film would be even close to as captivating on a TV or god forbid…a laptop.
Is it one of the greatest movies ever? I don’t think it is.
Is it Denis Villenueve’s magnum opus? I don’t think it is either.
But I do think it could be one of the best film trilogies if it really sticks the landing with Dune: Messiah.
But also what do I know, I’m a loser reviewing films to the voices in my head.
