The Ugly Stepsister

2025

★★★½ 5

Funny enough, retellings of classic fairy tales have been all the rage as of lately and fortunately, The Ugly Stepsister shares nothing in common with whatever is happening in The Poohniverse.

Instead, Emilie Blichfeldt’s take on Cinderella has the bones of the classic Perrault tale, but the blood and guts of The Brothers Grimm rendition— this is meant both figuratively and literally. While the murmurings of someone puking at a Sundance Midnight premiere is almost tradition at this point, for this…

Eyes Wide Shut

This pot is making you aggressive.

Call it an erotic thriller all you want, as long as you consider it a black comedy as well. Anyways, masterpiece and such.

Kraven the Hunter

2024

★★½ 5

It took me until Kraven the Hunter to realize how much I’ll miss the Sony-Verse. As frustrating as they were and with all of their glaring flaws (there were many), they still offered a sense of reprieve from the plastic and corporate feel of the MCU.

Maybe it’s this movie’s go-for-broke attitude or ATJ’s effortless charisma— whatever it is, Kraven struck a chord with me that no other Sony-verse movie had before, and for that, I’ll at the very least miss what these movies brought to the table.

Train to Busan

2016

★★★★ 14

Crazy how there hasn’t been a better zombie since this movie came out. It’s almost like everyone saw this and just gave up.

Except The Waking Dead, which now has like 5 spin-offs lol

Death Note

2017

★½ 13

Swore I’d never watch this again, yet here we are.

Released during the infancy of Netflix originals and maybe should have been our first warning sign of what was to come? Even if you’re able to somehow watch this in a vacuum and disassociate from the manga/anime. It’s incoherent at best, shallow at its worst.

Never going to blame Wingard for attempting the studio system rat race after gems like The Guest and You’re Next— at least there is some semblance…

Bird Box

2018

★★½ 3

It’s never not interesting, I’ll give it that. It works as a collection of good scenes with no real connective tissue. Get rid of the entire river sequence and maybe the story can maintain and ounce of tension.

Podcasts are crazy because I thought I’d never watch this again. Wild how this movie had a stranglehold on the world for like 3 months. Bird Box challenge? Lol
