Friday the 13th

1980

★★½ 24

Very possible the best thing this movie gave us was the Friday the 13th game back in 2017.

Which, hot take, that game was the only asymmetrical survival game that truly understood what made that genre enjoyable and I blame Dead by Daylight’s obsession with making the genre a competitive sweat fest as a major reason for the genre’s downfall.

Lost in Starlight

All that money Netflix spent on that embarrassing TUDUM event should have been used to market Lost in Starlight.

Capitalism, fascism, government control of our bodies. Wake up. Work. Die. Repeat. Not sure if we can beat the system, but for Bong Joon Ho, it’s worth fighting if there’s love.

Profoundly romantic movie.

The Electric State

2025

½ 30

Bad movies exist. They have existed and will continue to always exist. The Electric State is a bad movie directed by two people who would ironically be the villain of their own movie. It’s images lack any semblance of life and in lieu of any meaningful storytelling, it opts for exposition dumps set to Now That’s What I Call Music: Vol 7 needle drops. Why explore a theme when we can have Milly Bobby Brown lethargically tell you them to the…

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

2003

★★½ 7

Epitome of a contemporary update that intentionally abandons the thoughtfulness of the original in favor of “action and gore”, so it winds up feeling mostly empty at the end. BUT. I adore the way this looks, Pearl captures a very different grime of the Texas summer—  everyone is doused in sweat and there’s some really great lighting in those big seat pieces. Plus, I am very pro-Jessica Biel as a final girl, great stuff from her.

Also, I find it…

The Village

2004

★★★★½ 11

Tired: the dialogue is bad, the twist is dumb.
Wired: poetic, devastatingly romantic.

One of Shyamalan’s best.

Thor: Love and Thunder

2022

★★ 10

Maybe the epitome of all the shortcomings in phase 4. A directionless mess, a “He right behind me isn’t he” type movie. Actors mostly innocent here, they are doing their best to cook with the terrible ingredients provided by the unholy combo of Waititi x Feige.

Love Hurts

2025

★½ 9

At a slight loss of words when it comes to Love Hurts. It seemingly has the right pieces, but the end result is so…baffling? Not a shred of chemistry between the characters (save Ashley and The Raven) and while I love the use of props in the Chan-esque choreography, I fear the 87North style of action is beginning to feel stale.

Ke Huy Quan still exudes an absurd amount of charm, but its drowned out by a sea of mediocrity.

Train Dreams

2025

★★★★★ 7

Soul-igniting. Will Patton’s narration plus Bryce Dessner’s score is a deadly combo, but to be fair, I’ve always been a sucker for the movies that attempt to wrestle with life and its endless mysteries.

My favorite of Sundance 2025. Happy it got distribution, sad it’s via Netflix.

Bones and All

Very few directors could make the devouring of a human simultaneously devastating and romantic. Maybe my favorite Luca movie, but I’ve realized my favorite Luca movie is whichever one I’ve watched most recently.
