Mimic

1997

★★★ 5

I it, my affinity for 90s creature features is much higher than most. So a movie about mutated cockroaches directed by GDT is right up my alley. There’s a lot to ire about Mimic from the creature design to the atmosphere that oozes filth, but in a lot of ways it does feel restrained. GDT has made it known he wasn’t a fan of the theatrical cut and while the Director’s Cut exist, it still wasn’t “exactly the movies he wanted to do”.…

Hellboy

2004

★★★½ 5

The early 2000s saw an influx of superhero films, some that were obviously great, Spider-Man 2, but arguably more that were comically bad. In a lot of ways, the odds were stacked against Hellboy. There was controversy around its title, a stark contrast to the ion of the Christ which was released two months prior and on its way to becoming one of the most profitable films of 2004. The last thing theaters wanted was for a nice Christian family to go on…

The Devil's Backbone

2001

★★★★ Watched

Not a horror in the classical sense of the word, even if it does involve a ghost. But a horror in the way that it tragically depicts the cataclysmic consequences of war, specially on the most innocent of our society.

Utterly devastating.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

2008

★★★★ Watched

With the critical success of Pans Labyrinth, GDT was given much more control on Hellboy II, especially in comparison to the first one, and it definitely shows. The move away from Nazis and invoking a more folklore approach allowed GDT to really flex his muscles. The world is bigger, the creatures are weirder, but the heart that made the first film so special still loudly beats throughout the this one.

Justice for Hellboy III, oh what could have been.

Crimson Peak

2015

★★★★½ 7

In 2015 I made the decision to skip Crimson Peak. This was a bad decision.

I adored this, borderline obsessed with it? I’m about 7 years too late to comment on the oozing atmosphere or haunting romance, but I really fell in love with GDT’s storytelling, which isn’t a huge shocker.

Anyways, I’m prepared to make this my entire personality for the next few months.
