A movie that consistently takes your breath away with its sheer scale and visual artistry— only to fumble majorly with its disted script that never gets really good until the final act. Rarely gives us an opportunity to sit and breathe with any of the characters or the world so it’s difficult to become fully invested in the journey.

I don’t even mind that it’s derivative, just wish it didn’t feel like it was cut into a million pieces only to be put clumsily back together. That being said, has more heart than most blockbusters, so it has that going for it.

Release the Edwards cut?

Concrete Utopia

2023

★★★½ 2

South Korea’s entry to compete for next year’s Best International film is not what you’d expect, especially when compared to more traditional Oscar hopefuls, but that’s what makes it all the more exciting.

A disaster dystopian film that focuses less on the spectacle of the former and more on the inevitable unraveling of the micro-societies that emerge from the ashes of the apocalypse— which all on paper is extremely interesting, but at times Concrete Utopia feels like it itself is being engulfed…

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines

No personality, no bite— a climax-less tension-less 90 minutes that not even Pam Grier could save.

It might be time to bury this franchise in a normal cemetery so we can avoid any future revivals.

Saltburn

2023

★★★½ 25

Immaculately shot, often hilarious, but in the end, leaves a lot to be desired.

It’s not a movie that will be as polarizing as Fennell’s previous film, mainly because it takes far fewer risks. A straightforward fever dream about one man’s depraved obsession with the glitz and glamor of wealth, but it’s lack of risks isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes a structurally sound black comedy with banger millennial needle drops is enough to satiate— this one just happens to have all-timer performances from Keoghan & Elordi.

It’s also unapologetically horny, so in the end we all win.

Some highs (Nelson + Derrickson) but mostly middling or worse entries that won’t convince any haters of found footage to love the subgenre (if anything it may reinforce that hatred).

When Evil Lurks

2023

★★★★ 7

Violent, scary, and bleak. The (un)holy trinity of a kickass horror film.

An easy contender for my favorite horror of the entire year. What I ire about Rugna’s work is how patient he is with all his scares— reeling you in until you can’t breathe from the anticipation. Palpable dread.

Also, his lore! It runs so deep, making what could have been an average horror, stellar.

Going to be riding the high from this one for awhile. Pumped it will be released on Shudder in late October because it’s a perfect movie for the spooky season.

The Fall of the House of Usher

Not an actual review since we only saw the first 2 episodes, but Mike Flanagan went beast mode.

Has the potential to be my favorite of his series. The ending of episode 2 left me gobsmacked.

It’s like the weird depraved baby of Bacurau and Straw Dogs, but not as good as either of those. The use of a woman’s trauma as the sole reason the audience should root for her is mostly lazy and kind of slimy— especially considering the movie gets leagues better when it’s just Eat the Rich the movie.

Kind of a bummer because it’s well shot and tense, but it’s attempt to give the audience a moral conundrum is it’s ultimate downfall.
