The Seed of the Sacred Fig

2024

★★★★ 10

Art as the match that lights the fuse to the dynamite of change. This is why movies matter. Overwhelmed by the courage from the entire cast & crew, hope everyone gets a chance to see this.

The Shrouds

2024

★★★½ 6

Conspiracy is the new sex! Grief eats the flesh!

It’s a movie overflowing with dialogue, zero silence to sit with an image, which initially I found mildly irritating, but it’s possible that Cronenberg is exploring how we use conversation about anything (and everything) to cope and to avoid the pains of silence— and I prefer to choose this way of thinking.

The biggest downside is how much the Tesla logo is on the screen.

Anyways, it’s one that really cooks the longer I’ve sat with it, but not shocked people aren’t vibing with it.

Bird

2024

★★★★ 5

The hyper speed moments of youth crashing against the hurdles of adulthood. So much will be said about Barry Keoghan, Franz Rogowski, and Nykiya Adams, and rightfully so, they are electrifying.

But add Bird to the list of movies that not only accurately captures the lives of today’s teens, but uses it as a device to shape the actual filmmaking. Interstitials of video footage captured by the characters creates such a deep layer of connectivity— I wish more filmmakers would be more playful in how they tell their narrative, but I suppose this is one of many reasons why Andrea Arnold is so special.

The Surfer

2024

★★★ 12

Anti-Australian propaganda on acid (complimentary)

Oh, Canada

2024

★★★ 5

Unable to tell if this movie is actually compelling or if Phosphorescent is very good at making music.

The reality behind legend, reckoning with the ripples of our youth — it’s a surprisingly tender experience thanks to the Richard Gere performance, but its exploration is so undercooked (dare I say, rushed). The individual bones are excellent, it’s just missing a lot of connective tissue.

Something about the ending feels like boomer’s on Facebook-coded, idk I can’t explain it.

Kinds of Kindness

2024

★★★★ 30

The absurd measures in which we go for acceptance, love, and community— and the people who exploit those measures.

Dogtooth fans, we won.

Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In

Hong Kong CINEMA, baby.

If movies from the West had this much juice, the world would be a better place.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

2024

★★★★★ 20

A movie that makes you feel like you can run through a brick wall, heavy metal cinema. Has all the fire & brimstone of Fury Road but this time it’s baked into a coming-of-age revenge epic. So much of the movie’s beauty is in its ability to balance the frenzy with the tender— Furiosa as a harbinger of pain and Furiosa as a beacon of hope.

That is not to say Furiosa abandons the joys of the screeching inferno of colliding steel, there’s plenty…
