Dangerous Animals

★★★½ 3

Here’s how Dangerous Animals can still win the palme d’or

Die My Love

★★★★½ 5

Tremendous. The Ramsay, Lawrence, McGarvey combo is incendiary.

A lot of thoughts, but so far it’s my fave of the fest.

Karate Kid: Legends

2025

★★½ 16

There is one scene that was very inspired by classic Chan choreography, Ben Wang stumbling all over the place while beating people up, and I thought maybe there’s hope for this movie after all.

It never happened again.

Suffers from a major identity crisis. Also, an awful soundtrack.

Forever indebted to Eva Longoria for saving John Wick.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

For those we’ll never meet.

Even if the series has earned the right to relish in the past a bit, the long-winded exposition drops and outright weird character decisions (mainly Grace + Gabriel) make the first hour undoubtedly frustrating.

Yet, I’ve happily watched this movie 3 times now, twice within 12 hours, and I’m finding different ways to appreciate the first hour (and new ways to find it frustrating). Fortunately once we get to the sub, the movie operates at…

Crazy idea, scrap the jangling keys multiverse in favor of stories that care about their characters.

Also more movies where Bucky looks like the Terminator.

A Minecraft Movie

2025

★½ 78

Movie unironically uses the word “unalive” by the way. Society is cooked.

Too many characters, Overworld feels weightless, storytelling is afterthought— normal ingredients for a blockbuster intended for kids from a studio that only cares about exploiting an IP kids love. 2025 y’all.

Incoming “it’s a kids a movie” excuses as if kids movies can’t be good

Snow White

2025

★★ 7

“Waiting on a Wish” is a bop and Zegler is immensely talented, but any goodwill completely disintegrates at a script level. Attempts to forge its own path, but it’s handcuffed to the original, so it awkwardly fails at both. Inert storytelling made substantially worse by Gadot’s comically terrible performance, repugnant CGI dwarves, ionless direction— it’s an amalgam of aspects that actively drains the movie of magic, but arguably the mere existence of the movie implies it had no interest in creating it either.

Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie

2025

★★★★½ 5

There is a certain kind of magic Matt Johnson is uniquely skilled at conjuring. Fans of the popular Vice web series already knew this, more people discovered it when watching Blackberry, but Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie is that singular Matt Johnson magic fully realized. Hilarious, yes (I want to avoid festival hyperbole, but I’ve never seen such uproarious laughter during a screening in my lifetime), but what I’ve appreciated more about Johnson & McCarrol’s comedy series is how…

Death of a Unicorn

2025

★★ 54

Happy people are finding enjoyment in this but found it to be a slog. Grating humor, puddle deep themes, emotionally disingenuous, maybe the most unlikable Paul Rudd has ever been? Classic case of a movie that has nothing interesting to say so it attempts to distract you with weightless kills.

Silver lining, if you thought you appreciated Jurassic Park before (hell, even The Lost World), get ready to appreciate it even more.
