This is my all-time most-watched movie. I watched it every week for a few months when I was a teen getting into serious adult movies and this checked every box for me at the time. It still has to win me over now, as an actual adult, to overcome its gimmick but it always does. Once it grounds itself into the insight into detective work—the method, the mysteries, the empathy—and the way it slowly builds Mills and Somerset's bond, I'm all in. And then we plunge into the depths of evil and the human condition.

The third act is sensational, not just for its stunning narrative turns, but in the dramatic juxtapositions of its location and construction. This is a masterclass in marrying atmosphere with three-dimensional characters and profound themes.
