The Big Sleep: Like father, like son, like Bogart

I’ve always thought my dad looked a bit like Humphrey Bogart. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, or something a son might do when he looks up to his father and he actually looks nothing like him. Maybe it was seeing black and white photos of my dad when he was younger and I was at a more impressionable age, at a similar time to when I got into Film Noir and of course, that genre’s central, most iconic figure.

Jumbo Records' Jack recommends April

In a terrifying time for abortion rights, powerful films on the subject like the new Déa Kulumbegashvili film, April, feel incredibly important. So we were very pleased to hear that Jack from Jumbo was struck by the film and he's kindly shared his thoughts about it...

This week's Hyde Park Pick: The Surfer

Nicolas Cage has always been an INTENSE actor (to say the least) and with well over 100 films Nicolas Cage has starred in, that’s a lot of Nicolas Cage to choose from. Some people love Nicolas Cage, some not so much (which is odd to me). But so be it. Irrespective, you’re always guaranteed a PERFORMANCE.

"Don’t let the sadness put you off because not only is this lovely family a joy to spend time getting to know even while grieving, it leaves you with so many interesting ideas to think about including our relationship with nature and our environment; the complexities of family and morality of decision making as a parent; filmmaking and storytelling; processing grief and change. These and so much more!" - Martha, Digital Marketing Coordinator.

The Ballad of Wallis Island

2025

"Gentle, funny but also beautifully sincere. This is largely down to the low-key but thoughtfully crafted characters and the wonderful performers bringing them to life. The screen is mainly held by the small cast of Tim Key, Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan and there’s something deeply genuine in their interactions with one another." Wendy, Head of Cinema.

Chicken for Linda!

"A truly one-off Parisian visual treat! If you paused on any moment of this beautifully hand-drawn animation, you would be gifted with a stand-alone work of art. This vibrant animation is simple yet dynamic, as the imagery dances in front of your eyes. Characters and their emotions are reduced to broad strokes and abstract animation which gloriously present the external and internal workings of the characters and their dynamics in beautiful unison." Sylvia, Young Audiences Officer.

Good One

"Le Gros’ performance in Good One feels like a companion to his role in Certain Women, just as the films themselves perhaps feel like works which could benefit from being appreciated together. Beautiful, reserved, powerful films about the burdens women in all their beautiful forms carry in a society made for and by men." Wendy, Head of Cinema.

La Cocina

★★★★½ Liked

Such cool cinematography. I loved the choppy, slow motion frames in the opening scene. The sound design was so cool, mainly when they’re making food but also just listening to people’s voices was so clear. Insanely accurate to what working in a restaurant is like. They really nailed all the personalities, dynamics and issues that go on in a restaurant. They capture the chaos of a kitchen so well. The last 20 or so minutes were insane and probably my fave of the movie.
