Deadpool & Wolverine

We are so back! Right? Seems to be the statement some are making while others are asking. I’m not sure you could definitively make that kind of statement yet and I’m not sure that kind of question can be answered simply by one solid entry into the MCU out of what has been a slate of mediocrity as of late. But, what I can say is that this is a step in the right direction and the most fun I’ve had with the Marvel movie in a very long time. My theater was hype for all the crowd pleasing moments and laughed at pretty much all the jokes. I do think this is the best entry into the MCU in a long time.

Deadpool & Wolverine delivers on most fronts more than it doesn’t. It’s definitely not a perfect movie but it is one that I can find myself re-watching many of times and still enjoy it. And it is definetly the best MCU movie since No Way Home. I actually think the two films are very similar in a weird way but No Way Home does it in a more impactful way. This movie still successfully hits a lot of the same beats though!

Starting with the positives! I firmly believe they successfully managed to bring back the Wolverine without tainting his legacy from Logan. Hugh Jackman is genuinely so good in this movie and he gives it a lot of much needed heart. Pretty much all of the emotionally impactful elements come from his character. And you can tell this is probably the most fun he’s had playing the Wolverine out of the couple decades he has been this character. The movie is also incredibly funny! I haven’t laughed that hard in the movie in a very long time. And this will probably be the funniest movie I will see all year. The action is stylistic and just from that opening sequence you know you’re in for a fun bloody treat. Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool I genuinely don’t think anyone could play that character any better. And the chemistry Hugh and Ryan have is worth the price for ission alone. Also there are some surprises in here that left my jaw on the floor. I’m not sure how they were able to keep it a secret for as long as they did. I also loved that even though this is a multi-versal movie, it still felt very self contained and tired to tell a personal story with these characters.

Now for the things that didn’t exactly work for me. I felt that sometimes it was over indulgent and it’s really hard to expound upon that without going in the spoilers. Normally the Deadpool movies tend to walk that line well without being exhausting but unfortunatly there were a couple moments in this movie that exhausted me. The pacing was fantastic, but the plot was paper thin so it was very hard to feel any stakes whatsoever. The villain while her powers being unsettling and interesting, felt very one note and her motives were being evil just for the sake of being evil. I do think most of the jokes did land however, a few of them did overstay they’re welcome. And they tried to add a deep emotional element for Deadpool, but I don’t think quite worked mainly due to the fact that he was joking pretty much the whole time and we didn’t live in those serious moments long enough to feel it.

All that being said, this is definetly worth your time and I think anyone is going to have a blast watching it. It’s very possible this could be my favorite Deadpool movie even though the story and emotional elements were stronger in the first two. This one is just so badass and so incredibly funny I don’t know how you wouldn’t have a good time watching it. I’m interested to find out if we will see Deadpool and Wolverine in future MCU projects. But until then, this was the team up of the century and something you don’t want to miss out on!
