approaching romance films as someone who’s been with his significant other for 10 years is very interesting. there are romance films that i absolutely love, mostly thanks to aesthetic decisions, sharp writing, and my general inability to not cry while watching romantic moments unfold, that i can’t even remotely relate to (i.e. past lives and in the mood for love). and then there are romance films that i don’t necessarily think are poorly constructed, i just struggle to empathize with…

The Bling Ring

never quite bought into this as a feature film, which is a real shame given how fascinating of a read the suspects wore louboutins is. a lot of dead weight, with its highs never feeling high enough to warrant the hour and a half runtime. still need to dive deeper into sofia's filmography but, as of now, this is the first outing where i wasn’t on board with her direction.

Phantom of the Paradise

way too incoherent to convey anything meaningful about the music industry and certainly never blends its satire and psychedelic horror well enough to warrant praise. important conversations to be had but this was mostly a shallow exploration of exploitation that felt more tedious than entertaining.

the greatest action franchise. one of the most uniquely stylized series of films in modern cinema. nothing short of monumental.

where do I even begin in vocalizing my love and iration for john wick?

do I start with its design and its anime influence? its instantly recognizable visual style. the sleek, neon-lit cityscapes contrasting the dark, moody interiors. both gorgeous in their own right through the smooth and, often, cozy cinematography. striking colors – neon blues and reds, but also…

would’ve loved to come on here and tell you guys that my relationship with this movie has changed after not having seen it for over a decade (probably) but, unfortunately, revising my history has been placed on hold. a few cool shots here and there aren’t enough to prove meaningful for me. for every one beautiful digital image we see, there are four equally hideous shots that looks no better than something we’d see in the adventures of sharkboy and lavagirl.…

this shit is so funny. its actually impressive how well this comedy holds up. everything from "i'll be back around shortly" to "he's a friend from work" to "the revengers" and chris hemsworths' physical comedy and every line of dialogue that comes out of jeff goldblums mouth... its all just so funny. this whole project holds up so much better than most mcu movies. even the set pieces and the emotion. applaudable entry into this franchise.

highlights it’s cultural and musical landscape in a way that’s going to stick with me more than its supernatural elements. the supernatural beats and folklore legend were as electric and as fun as the trailers had promised, but it was the music and its impact that really had me feeling something. need to witness this in imax before committing to the 4.5, but this was great. had me smiling a lot.

Adolescence

tackles social media and masculinity in a way that caught me off guard. its uncomfortable and unrelenting but its an important watch. it's unfortunately too real in how easily influenced the youth are growing up in a hyper-connected world while their parents and authority figures remain ignorant to the exact nature of what they're exposed to and its harm. the show plays out as a haunting crime drama but works really well as a cautionary tale in not allowing the…

an internally fractured man masking himself with external stoicism and confidence because men are often socialized to hide their emotions and avoid seeking help… there may not be a character that embodies that weight of pressure in a world that seems determined to break him down better than luke.

what we've got here is failure to communicate

Black Bag

mostly a mixed bag with some hints of something great sprinkled throughout. it’ll lean positive in my rating thanks to a really solid set of performances and a few fun exchanges here and there. no pair better than fassbender and blanchett to play hard-ass husband-wife in a test of loyalty and betrayal. it’s nowhere near the level of ambition and sexiness the trailer had promised and its writing can come off a bit elementary but, regardless, it was fun watching this ensemble go back and forth while this (relatively) intriguing web unraveled. certainly offered up some irable laughs (one dinner scene in particular).

a really fun blend of science fiction and humanity, laced with bong joon-ho’s distinct direction and pattinson putting on an incredible show. it’s more or less everything bong has become synonymous with; sharp social commentary, meticulous visual flair, and something that feels very personal, while straying away from typical genre norms. with that said, i need to be honest with myself no matter how much it hurts me… i can’t help but feel slightly underwhelmed. a feeling i never thought…

so unbelievably indifferent on this movie and the more i watch it the more difficult it becomes to assess my relationship to it. moments that warrant a half star rating and moments that warrant a 5 star rating. it prioritizes fan-service and sacrifices creative integrity. it was an event and it gave me my most memorable theater experience and for that i’ll forever be thankful, but it’s flaws are unavoidable. so many instances i find myself rolling my eyes, cringing,…
