Leaving the theater last night, having just sat through the excruciating experience of Ghost in the Shelll, I was furious. I wasn't merely furious at the misconstrued world-building, all imitation and no flair, all dazzling 1990s sci-fi dress-up and no semblance of imagination. I wasn't simply furious at the tattered remnants of a screenplay and its constant tendency of oversimplification in regards to its existentialism and its gender ambiguity. The reviews for this sort of baffle me. What do you want people? I don’t think the negative reviews can be entirely chalked up to the fans of the source material being pedantic, grumpy dorks. I liked the original animated movie and I thought this was a deftly executed adaptation. Adaptations of this kind are incredibly dicey to pull off, just think of all the terribly botched attempts from the past. This is the one you’re going to hate on? Come on.

My primary takeaway from this film is that
ScarJo's haircut makes her look very Elven,
& that I would now like to see her play an elf.

There are some amazing jackets in Ghost In The Shell.

There are at least five that I want to bring your attention to. Now, three of them are worn by Scarlett Johansson. Because it's dead new, there aren't many screenshots of this yet, so you'll have to bear with me.

This one is the one she wears for the most part in this and that's understandable. It's an excellent bomber jacket that she's got a great fit for there, and quite similar to one I got from River Island a couple of months ago.

I slightly preferred this one though. ittedly you can only see a part of it, which is a shame, and it looks as though it might…

I kind of fell for this right away, such gorgeous affected designer melancholy, and what's initially clumsy about it (and there's a lot) also seems deliberately calculated to echo this tantalizingly janky early 90's vibe, I dunno. I mean Michael Wincott is even in it. Formatting the Major's transformation from a Japanese woman into Scarlet as an immoral act of aggression may not be sufficient apologia, but it's certainly not incoherent.

It's funny, all these people bitching about whitewashing when it turns out the movie they're bitching about is about whitewashing (among other things).

Is it pretty? Absolutely.

Is it great? Of course not.

Is it as bad as they say it is? No, not at all.

A decent adaptation with several changes—some good, some dubious, some respectful, some circumstantially and thematically altering. Whether those changes are for better or for worse depends on your attachment to the franchise.

If the movie seems interesting to you, don't listen to the critics on this one. Go see it and judge it for yourself.
