Việt and Nam

2024

VIỆT AND NAM not only evokes lust and sensuality but also shows us the country’s dichotomies. After long colonial oppression, the population now seeks a new identity and the right to claim its own desires—but while actively fighting for a new future, the past still has a hold on the present.

Dreams and memories also play a crucial role, and that is not the only parallel to Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s oeuvre. But with this film shot on grainy 16mm film, director Minh Quý Trương proves, above all, that he is a unique talent. VIỆT AND NAM is enigmatic, queer, and visually breathtaking.
