Ghost in the Shell

1995

Women are unstoppable in animation as well. Or cyborg women in the case of Mamoru Oshii’s GHOST IN THE SHELL, the anime cult classic based on Masamune Shirow’s original manga. In the year 2029 technology is so highly evolved that cyborgs are commonplace. Moreover, the human brain can now directly connect to the internet. Main character Major Motoko Kusanagi is a cyborg who leads a Secret Intelligence Operation within the counter terrorism and cybercrime division. Her team has to investigate a foreign agent and gets on the trail of a much bigger criminal, the hacker Puppet Master, known as “the most dreaded cyber-criminal of all time”.

The film was not a box-office success, but has accumulated a cult status. GHOST IN THE SHELL inspired different directors, from the Wachowskis to James Cameron, and most notably Quentin Tarantino. When Tarantino wanted to add an anime sequence to tell the bloody background story of O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu) in KILL BILL, the only production company he trusted, was the Japanese Production I.G., which had created his favourite anime GHOST IN THE SHELL.
