Three hours of competent men being charmingly sneaky. 

I just loved this movie. The extent that it characterizes and moves the plot along, cutting between all the different setups and payoffs throughout the planning and execution of the escape is extremely entertaining. The three hours flew by, frankly, and I was still left wanting more.

I’m quite glad this monotone performance style didn’t prevail through Lanthimos’s films that followed. Maybe this is just the only way to make a film like this not be entirely full of cry-acting, but it nearly sucked me out of an otherwise effectively disturbing and sociologically interesting story.

 Might be a 4 - let me stew on it for a while.

I expected to be wowed by Garland’s singing and performance, but I did not expect how hard of an emotional punch this film would go on to pack - especially in the second act. The conclusion melodramatically dragged on a bit with 2 or 3 too many beats of Garland cry-talking for my tastes, but core of both the leads’ arcs are thematically compelling and I was far more entertained throughout than I expected.

Quietly funny and too humbly unassuming to make a splash on release, Eephus is worth a watch for not just baseball fans, but fans of dry comedy as well. I’ve been looking for a good baseball hangout movie for some time and this perfectly scratches that long-held itch.
