There's another A24 horror film every other horror film from them is compared to, and this is the first one that feels as though that specific reaction might actually be warranted. Similar thematic elements, yet different, lackluster presentation.
Another movie has come and gone featuring the usual "omg it made ppl vomit in the theater" ment, and ultimately doesn't live up to it.
I think the practical effects are the best part of Bring Her Back.
However, all of the story elements that are presented in this film, in this manner, lend themselves to short form storytelling imo(Bring Her Back might've been more effective as a short). I'm sure there's a full length feature worthy of the runtime in here somewhere. But in the way it's offered here, I don't believe it is.
I think the storytelling is subpar, and the score throughout did nothing to help. The acting and practical effects did all of the heavy lifting. Bring Her Back is the kind of film that makes folks say they dislike "elevated horror". There isn't much nuance in the storytelling. The most impactful moments are telegraphed. They ARE still impactful, just predictable. Unfortunately for me, this will be a Sally Hawkins film I soon forget(not Sally's fault at all. This film would be even worse without someone as talented as Sally Hawkins as the lead, and the other actors not holding their own!)
