Hard Truths

Completely bowled over by this. Every burst of anger or humor flattened by the silence that comes from having to exist like this, having to live with pain you simply cannot communicate. Marianne Jean-Baptiste with the performance of the year? Decade? Life? A remarkable exercise in screen acting, taking up the frame early, larger than life until the rage and pain consumes her and she just shrinks and shrinks, even her face seemingly swallowing itself. It’s fucking NUTS. A giant.

Tuwaine Barrett too. A beautiful performance. A moment towards the end is one of my favorite bits of simple humanity in anything ever. Up there with Dafoe dancing with his family in Tommaso that I’ll think about forever. Leigh, ever reliable, in not allowing you to walk away with simple catharsis. How could there be?
