Pieces of a Woman

2020

★★★½

Starring Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf in their electric, career best performances, this emotionally harrowing film is filled with realistic, grieving and symbolic storytelling.

Pros- The initial 30 minutes might easily be the most emotionally haunting and splendid opening act in any film this year. The performances across the board are splendid, never coming across as showy and so is the direction with subtle long takes staying on the characters for often too long, portraying their grief and complex emotions. The film surprisingly ended up being very poetic and symbolic than I had expected it to be.

Cons- The film may feel attenuated after its stunning opening act, although the final 30 minutes provide a deep, cathartic closure to the film built upon such an unimaginable trauma. In this way, 'Pieces Of A Woman' clearly isn't a film for everyone and might feel over dragged to some of its viewers.

Despite its overlong second act, 'Pieces Of A Woman' through its performances and beautiful imagery haunts your senses and sets a bleak atmosphere, by providing a somewhat uplifting and optimistic ending which has the potential of being life altering to many of its zealous viewers.
